Review of Repo Man (1984) by William V — 14 Jul 2009
Repo Man is a pure gold B-movie masterpiece. A brilliant, hilarious, and surrealistic attack on every facet of contemporary culture. As punked out a film as you are likely to find while simultaneously mocking the punk phenomenon as a disingenuous, white surburban phenomenon that was more about rebelling against mommies and daddies than against society.
At the same time, Repo Man depicts a society that needs to be rebelled against: televangists, covert government conspiracies and cover-ups, and the general wasteland of contemporary society require a new form of rebel, a new ethical paradigm represented by the repo men.
The repo men develop their own ethical paradigm and use the beauracratic system against itself for profit. Repo Man is ultimately a film unlike any other: surreal bordering upon mystical, hilarious bordering on stupid and brilliant, and ultimately just bad-ass.
A film that should be viewed by every human being but especially those who delight in underground and B-level cinema.
