Review of Rent (2005) by Petera. — 27 Nov 2005
I really enjoyed this movie. It had flaws (what movie doesn't?)...but I think RENT suffers from essentially a bias people have against movie musicals. I really believe this (though I have no data to support this) that movie musicals have to be BETTER than the average movie for people to like it.
In other words, people tend to be skeptical going in and the movie has to outperform itself to be well-liked. I don't know if this has to do with the idea of people breaking out into song makes some go "aw, come on!" Any problems I had with the movie had to do with the source material, though I do think the script could have been a bit punchier--I mean, if you are going to add dialogue to a sung-through piece, it needs to be better than what we saw in the film.
I suppose in the end, how you feel about RENT will color your opinion of this movie.
