Review of Renfield (2023) by Jluis_001 — 17 Apr 2023
Renfield struggles to survive beyond the primary resource it delivers. Even though the dynamic between its leads is very good, which is the best thing it has to offer.
Nicolas Cage is really good in the role of Dracula, while Nicholas Hoult doesn't exactly have the best comic timing, but he pulls off the role.
The problem lies in the fact that its concept fails to produce a more entertaining exploration between the humor and the violence and instead goes for a plot that doesn't suit the main characters because they both feel external to the rest of the events.
Renfield is a graphic and humorous movie. One is grateful that it embraces those two elements without reservation since it could have ended up much more toned down for a more mainstream audience, but that's not enough to pull it out of being a trivial endeavor that exhausts its interest the second the credits start to roll.
