Review of Remember the Titans (2000) by Greg B — 25 May 2011
Remember the Titans is not a bad film, it just tries too hard. Seemingly with every feel-good cliche, Titans tackles its subject matter of racial tension in a small, football-loving Virginia town. Denzel Washington plays a high school football coach who's first job is to take over for a successful, white coach in newly integrated WC Williams High.
There are scenes of bricks flying through windows, people rioting in the streets, and bigoted business owners refusing service to black kids. But, to combat this all, if one is to believe Remember the Titans, you just need sing-alongs, winning football games, and speeches about over-coming obstacles.
Again, Remember the Titans is not a bad film; it is just the Disney version of Mississippi Burning.
