Review of Remember the Titans (2000) by Dominic F — 02 Sep 2013
Remember the Titans is my favorite movie of all time. My bias comes from childhood memories of quoting the lines over and over and listening to the soundtrack on repeat. But as I grew up and lost interest in the movie played too often in my home, my sweet summertime memories faded away.
About a year ago I revisited the film for a class I was taking, and saw it in a whole new light. The issues the film highlights, racism in a heated and old world town in the south during the early 70s, are raw and real.
Though the subject matter is heavy, the characters feel real, real teenage boys on a real high school football team. Denzel Washington, playing the team's African American coach, portrays the father figure needed by so many in the time period his character lives in.
The film is flawlessly feel good and frighteningly convicting. A life time must see.
