Review of Remember the Night (1940) by Katie R — 04 Jun 2009
A beautiful film. One of my favorite Christmas movies. This is one of Stanwyck's very best performances. It's interesting to see she and Fred MacMurray paired together outside of film noir. It's a heartfelt, moving, genuine love story that is pretty much perfect in every way.
It's written by Preston Sturges (though not directed by him. Mitchell Leisen helmed this one), and it's proof that he could write more than comedy. This movie is funny at points, but it's more of a drama.
While Sturges wrote so many hilarious screenplays, I think his real strength was his ability to present a character that seems cliche, and then to dig deep beneath the surface and show how human that character is.
