Review of Remember (2015) by Tom E — 10 Oct 2017
The superb Christopher Plummer stars as Zev Guttman, a man living in a nursing home, recently widowed and suffering with dementia. A friend from his past also shares his nursing home and reminds him of a promise he made after the Second World War came to an end, a promise to end the lives of those Nazi soldiers who were responsibile for the death of his family in Auschwitz.
Zev, leaves the nursing home, financed by his friend and reliant on a letter his friend has written him and scribbles on his arm to remind him of who he is and what his mission is. From here he searches for and confronts old men he belives are ex-Nazi soldiers who worked at Auschwitz and then took on the identities of their victims at the end of the war.
It's a very tense film that is also tinged with sadness as the lead struggles to both remember his life and where his wife is everytime he wakes up. There is one particular scene Plummer shares with Dean Norris from Breaking Bad that was particulary tense and the resolution to the story blew me away.
Superb writing and a great lead.
