Review of Religulous (2008) by Patrick E — 12 Jun 2010
One of the most brilliant documentaries I have ever had the pleasure of viewing. Bill Maher's take on religion is both hilarious and completely engaging from start to finish. Religulous asks many important questions about religion that no one seems to be able to answer, and of course this film sort of mocks those people in offensive but amusing ways.
Maher encounters followers of several religions and asks them a variety of questions that they seem to have so much trouble answering. I kept wondering throughout this film how so many people can put every ounce of their faith into something they don't completely understand.
Some of these "followers" are even quite ignorant about the religion they've chosen to dedicate their life to. One of the most amusing scenes in my opinion was when Maher was interviewing a christian man who operates a rehabilitation center for homosexuals.
Some of the things that man said were so ridiculous I couldn't help but laugh my ass off and how Maher responded to him was absolutely hilarious. This film introduces many valid thoughts and ideas that question religion in logical and intelligent ways.
This is a smart and important film that everyone needs to see. Even if you're an individual of strong faith, you should see this film. The one thing I hate about religious followers is the bigotry most of them possess.
Religions have caused so much insanity and chaos throughout the world and this film is simply trying to say that it all may in fact just be a bunch of bullshit that has nothing to do with what or who controls the universe and what happens after we die.
I do believe in a higher power of some sort, I do believe in intelligent design, I'm just not sure I believe in God and some of the absurd religions we have created for whatever reason. I grew up in a christian school so I know the teachings of God and Jesus, and I have to say I don't find much of it to be very appealing.
I believe that the truth of whatever created the universe and everything in it is completely unknown to all of us. This film is awesome. It's an intelligent film that must be seen. Any of those overly religious people who wont see this film because they claim it's all wrong should be ashamed of themselves.
Bigotry is something we really don't need in this world. Religulous is a masterpiece. Bill Maher is a funny fucker.
