Review of Religulous (2008) by Ollie W — 23 Nov 2011
A compelling subject matter ripe for an interesting and hilarious documentary is waiting to be explored here - sadly Bill Maher just doesn't do it any justice. Going by the old adage that it takes a stupid person to mock a stupid person, Maher aims his considerable comic talent and cynicism at only easy targets, questioning fanatics and idiots, delightfully watching them squirm under his heavy, abrupt questioning, but never with the intention of understanding them or their beliefs.
If however, he had taken his dogmatic disbeliefs to somebody with even a slither of intelligence, honesty or conviction - he might have actually sparked a fascinating discussion. This doesn't prove that Religion is as corrupt or immoral as it undoubtably is, it just proves that Maher and the always overrated Larry Charles (Director) are as stubborn and unreasonable as the obviously disturbed fanatics they joyfully court.
Maher might be hilarious, with whip-smart comic timing, but this is just lazy and far, far too easy.
