Review of Religulous (2008) by Emily A — 17 Jan 2012
Well, I am an atheist, so I agree with much of what he's trying to say -- however, this is not directed very well and is completely over-edited. The presentation is completely off. I know Bill Maher is a funny guy and everything, and as ridiculous as most of the religious stuff in here is, every time there's a cut away from an interview to a short "funny" clip, it takes away from interviews, and these interviews really are so clearly off-base that they can speak for themselves.
Regardless, they found some really frightening people to interview, and there are plenty of memorable quotes. "Of course you don't have to take an IQ test to be a senator," is an obvious highlight and it highlights a problem within the government, as well.
As a documentary, the bottom line is that this is entertaining but ultimately ineffective. It's not going to inspire anyone who is deeply religious to look at his or her religion differently..
