Review of Religulous (2008) by Jess L — 06 Feb 2013
My main problem with this film is that Bill Maher wants us to believe that he set out to find some answers about God and religion. He obviously set out to make an amusing movie filled with people who didn't know what they were talking about, thus making it easy for Maher to make fun of them and have a laugh at their expense.
It is a funny movie, but after 30 minutes of laughing at people's simplicity or stupidity it starts to feel a bit wrong. What I was waiting for the entire movie was Maher to talk to someone who actually knew their shit - to me that would have been a whole lot more interesting to have some sort of debate between Maher and an intellectual - notice how the two priests who actually knew how to talk about their religion were cut short and only appeared for a few minutes, yet you get 5 or so minutes of Jesus from the theme park .
.. in a word this film was disappointing.
