Review of Religulous (2008) by Craig H — 26 Jan 2014
As a disclaimer, I have to confess to not being a fan of Maher's smartass brand of comedy; I also find him personally hypocritical, and for those reasons, I avoided this for some time but finally watched it at the inducement of many friends who encouraged me to "give it a chance.
" Okay, I did, and it lived down to all my expectations. First of all, this is one of the many recent films classified as documentaries that really are not; we need a new category calling these what they are: "commentaries.
" In truth, this one is more schtick than actual commentary--with Maher's trademark snarkiness front and center. What really takes gall is opening the song with The Who's number "The Searcher," as if he hadn't already made up his mind beforehand and was honestly searching for answers to legitimate questions.
As to the content, I could go on and on about the problems in this one, but I believe I've spent more than enough time on this waste-of-life that plays only to the Bill Maher crowd, of which I am certain there are a goodly number.
You guys can have him.
