Review of Reign Over Me (2007) by Summer M — 01 Aug 2011
Very powerful movie. I'd have to give the most credit towards Adam Sandler, whose films are usually quite enjoyable. This was the first time I had ever seen him play as such a serious character. The movie overall had such a strong, deep message and the chemistry between Sandler and Cheadle was downright phenomenal. There was a perfect blend of comedy and drama (much more drama of course) but Sandler's jokes were funny. I cried quite a few times during the movie. I loved the scene where Charlie finally opens up to Johnson for the first time. Also, it was heartbreaking to watch him go berserk in the courtroom like that. There were a lot of familiar faces in this film besides the two leads, which I enjoyed. Liv Tyler, whom I adore from my favorite films 'The Lord of the Rings', is great as always. Ted Raimi had a brief, albeit good supportive role. Jada Pinkett Smith's character was a little weak and a tad jealous in some scenes, but she played that role well. It was good to see B.J. Novak in something serious as well (I've only seen him in The Office). The directions was quite stylish, particularly the scenes of the two of them just hanging out and playing video games. Their friendship was signified well. Some of the seens where Charlie screamed at Johnson were intense. It reminded me of Jamie Foxx's role in 'The Soloist'. The cinematography provided the dark, distressing feeling that was needed for the film (scenes of Charlie in his house and the scene when he points the gun at the guy in the cab). I wish it had ended a bit happier though. I was hoping Charlie would find better solace than he did.
Overall: Fantastic acting, stylish direction, good music, great writing.
