Review of Reign Over Me (2007) by Pete L — 23 Nov 2010
A unique spin on the "buddy movie". The story tells of a dentist named Alan(Cheadle), who runs into his former college roommate Charlie(Sandler), who lost his wife and three daugthers in the Sept.
11th attacks and has basically shut down and has basically become a husk of his former self. He's hit rock bottom and suffers from a form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Alan feels it is his duty to help Charlie recover.
This is by far Adam Sandler's best role. I felt so sorry for his character. Even though this is a drama, there are some pretty funny parts, but be warned this is a very sad movie. The characters are very well developed which is something you dont see a lot in movies these days.
The supporting cast is excellent with Liv Tyler as a psychologist who sees why Alan takes it upon himself to help Charlie, Jada Pinkett Smith as Alan's wife, and Saffron Burrows as a Alan's promiscuous patient who also cares about Charlie.
I found this to be a very touching movie.
