The film that truly shows the hidden talent of Adam Sandler. Set in post 9/11 New York, Reign Over Me follows a grief-stricken man and collector named Charlie Fineman who lost his family (wife and three young daughters) on 9/11, and he shuts out the world, but after meeting his old college roommate Alan Johnson, a successful dentist and family man, he starts rekindling his friendship with him.

Later on, Alan starts realizing the grim realization about his friend following the death of his loved ones, so he is encouraged by his in-laws and friend to get help. Where do I start off? Well, I'll start off with the background.

The film has the perfect and emotional setting for its interesting characters, most specifically Charlie, who is an odd, yet understandable person. The film does the right thing by studying the characters, including their past and current issues and lifestyle, daily activities and their personality, offering us quality characterization.

Mike Binder offers us a smartly-written, albeit uneven script that makes each scene precious, which is brought to life by his smart direction. The film also has great acting, especially from Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle, who also have chemistry between each other.

Sandler shows off dramatic acting abilities for the second time (first time was in Punch-Drunk Love, third time being Funny People), yet I think he should be using it more, and should start thinking about switching to comedy-drama and/or drama.

Sandler does an amazing job, and nails the role to a fault by fan standards, and so does Cheadle, who nails his role as the friendly, supportive friend as he tries to be nice to Charlie, as well as help him.

The film heavily focuses on the themes of loss, friendship, remembering, letting go, moving on, and finding your own way, which are clearly explored by the film by adding emotion, laughs, and complexion in order to prevent this from being too melodramatic (not there's anything wrong with that, but it wouldn't fully benefit the characterization).

The film is a charming, affecting tale, and a must-see for Sandler and Cheadle fans.
