Review of Reign of Fire (2002) by Alan W — 09 Jul 2010
If you have read any of my other reviews then you know that I enjoy disaster/apocalyptic movies. Reign of Fire while it may not be particularly well thought out and Christian Bale and Matthew McConahay may not give great performances, is still a solid B Movie.
I think Reign of Fire's strength is the originality of its premise. The idea of dragons taking over the world and trying to wipe out humans is original. I enjoyed the storyline, set pieces and the action sequences.
But Christian Bale may be at his weakest, Gerard Butler is easy to overlook because his role is unimportant. I actually like Matthew McConahay in this because it was different that any other role I had seen him in.
While he may not do it particularly well it is one of his more unique performances. The story moves along fine and the film is well made. But through out the whole movie I kept asking myself questions like how do they have enough fuel to fly that helicopter around all the time.
If dragons have ruled the world for 20 years I think they would have stopped refining oil. There are many instances where the writers just didnt think. But if you can turn your brain off (which I happen to be great at) and just try to enjoy the movie you should like it.
I own it on dvd and am definatly waiting for the Blu-ray.
