Review of Regular Lovers (2005) by Amy D — 14 Dec 2007
The cinematography by William Lubtchansky is top rate. It reminds me of Willy Kurant or Raoul Coutard.
Philippe Garrel chooses to keep super long takes, like Antonioni was famous for doing. I like that he takes that risk, but the percentage of shots where this doesn't work diminishes what he's trying to do.
I like stories about wasted youth. I also love to hear about Paris in May `68. It's even better that Louis Garrel is in this film, since he was so great in THE DREAMERS. And, with a literal nod to cinephiles, a character looks straight at the camera to reference Bertolucci.
So there are some great things in this film, it just doesn't take off until the second half.
