Review of Regression (2015) by Leon B — 05 Mar 2016
Review:
I must admit, I really got into the whole investigating side of this movie and I also was pieces all of the evidence together but when the truth started to unfold, I was really disappointed with the outcome. I was hoping that there was going to be some big conspiracy and that there was some major twists, towards the end but it all turned out to be a total waste of time. Ethan Hawke (Bruce Kenner) played his role well, by bringing intensity and intrigue to the film, and I liked the mood that was set from the beginning but it does become slightly boring after a while, because it seemed like Bruce was going round in circles. It does take some time for the movie to get going but once the various characters come out of the wood work, the suspense element of the concept comes to light and I personally started to suspect everyone of molesting Emma Watson (Angela), and worshipping Satan. If it wasn't for the disappointing ending and the slow pace, I would have given this movie top marks because it was quite enjoyable at the beginning but the director made the whole film seem quite pointless once the truth came out. Anyway, it's definitely a watchable movie, from a suspense point of view but I was hoping for a bit more with the ending. Average!
Round-Up:
Ethan Hawke, 45, has starred in a lot of "straight to DVD" movies lately and after looking at his upcoming movies, I can't seem him blowing up the box office anytime soon. After the surprising hit, Boyhood, I thought that his career would have taken a turn for the better but he is still making these mediocre movies which are quite forgettable. He's not an actor with many tools in the box but he usually puts in good performances and covers many different genres. The movie was directed by Alejandro Amenable, 43, who also made Open Your Eyes, the Others, the Sea Inside and Agora. As he also wrote this movie, I can totally blame him for the terrible ending and slow pace. The film didn't make a huge lose at the box office, so he didn't totally wreck this suspense/thriller but I'm sure that it would have made much more if he wouldn't have taken his foot of the gas towards the end.
Budget: $20million.
Worldwide Gross: $18million.
I recommend this movie to people who are into their crime/mystery/dramas starring Ethan Hawke, Emma Watson, David Thewlis, Dale Dickey and Lothaire Bluteau. 4/10.
