Review of Redwood Highway (2013) by Jeff N — 15 May 2014
Noting the comments by the reviewers about the pacing of this little gem of a film, I might hazard a guess that they might do with a little less caffiene in their pre-movie viewing beverage. This movie does not move at 120 mph because it is about a 75 year-old-woman who walks 80 miles at 4 miles per hour, not the other way around.
I am most grateful that we are given the opportunity to savor moments, rather than have to hope they can be re-viewed with a pause button. The choice of allowing the natural sounds of the environment these characters move through to be the majority of the soundtrack makes for far better story telling than a highly manufactured, intrusive songfest, hoping to be nominated for best song.
This is a film about caring for some wonderful people instead of being afraid of them. Ms. Knight and the wonderful locals the director has gathered around her in this adventure hit a wonderful, low-key rhythm that allowed me to savor rather than drown.
I will steal a saying: this is a movie that teaches that we are never too old to have an adventure. Redwood Highway probably won't be nominated for anything, come Oscar season. And that is high praise, indeed.
