Review of Redbelt (2008) by Amy V — 19 Sep 2008
I loves me some Chiwetel Ejiofor! I'm always intrigued by a well-done morality play, and this is certainly one of the better ones, though it is less spectacular or flashy as one might expect. It's short, tight, and to-the point, and it wouldn't be nearly as impressive if it didn't revolve around Chiwetel as the main character.
His character is the stuff of protagonist gold, as a believable and honorable man who has moments of weakness and walks head-on into the pitfalls of human nature. This is the real meat-and-potatoes of this "mixed martial arts" movie: not the mixed martial arts itself, but the choices of Chiwetel's character.
The script is top-notch and taut, and the directing is very visually pleasing without going into dramatic overload. It is a small and quiet film, however, so don't go in expecting a "Rocky" or anything like that.
But, then again, that's why I liked it so much.
