Review of Redbelt (2008) by Andy A — 03 Sep 2008
Pretty damn good. Another check in the 'win' column for Mamet. In essence, its a fight movie with a brain. A solid little tale about sticking to one's principles in an age where making a buck is the real badge of honor.
Chiwetel Ejiofor (still have trouble pronouncing his name out loud :P) is a complete revelation and shows that he has what it takes to be in the lead. While the movie cuts out a bit abruptly and the production is relatively unremarkable I have to hand it to the director for once again crafting such an emotionally intense build-up.
All the pieces fall into place perfectly like a neat little package--the kind that Mamet has become so adept at crafting. The breadth feels somewhat narrow but its focus is razor-sharp and never loses sight of the goal at the end of the tunnel.
And for mainstream audiences this film is a great deal more 'user-friendly' when compared to his other movies like "House of Games" or "Glengarry Glen Ross". Sharp and mesmerizing, this is might not be a great movie, but it certainly is a good one.
