Review of Redbelt (2008) by Will A — 07 Sep 2008
David Mamet does "Karate Kid." That's probably not the best description, but it kind of fits. It's undeniably a Mamet film, with his wonderful dialogue and endless con games and Ejiofor is great as a Jiu-jitsu instructor struggling with his nobility.
The plot, however, never really connects...it feels like a first draft that Mamet couldn't figure out how to tighten and make work. And the final act simply becomes prepostrous and anti-climactic.
The pieces never really add up to anything but it does hold your interest and feature some great work. Just in need of a massive script tune up.
