Review of Redbelt (2008) by Patrick D — 26 Sep 2008
A wonderful film. There are so many themes at work here, and they all pay off beautifully. A samurai-esque story about a good man surrounded by shit, trying his best to adhere to a rigid code of honor. This film also shares a profound resemblance to The Set-Up, a 40's noir which happens to be one of my absolute favorite films. It is obvious that David Mamet was very inspired by that film when writing Redbelt, as it pays respectful homage to it at every turn.
Redbelt is a film that doesn't get comfortable with genre. It makes the audience second guess what kind of film it is every 20 minutes. I fucking loved it.
Also, Chiwetel Ejiofor deserves the planets utmost respect. He is a legend already.
