Review of Redbelt (2008) by Ian D — 30 Sep 2008
I've never heard of David Mamet, but supposedly, he's some kind of big deal. Though contrary to what I keep hearing, the writing and direction are the weakest elements of the film. All the characters repeat lines as if it sounds natural, and it's confusing when it seems like there are two different conversations going on.
The plot, though unique, is a little hard to swallow at times. The supporting actors are not great. So what earns this movie four stars? Chiwetel Ejiofor. This guy commands the screen, and through him, we see not somebody following some misplaced sense of honor, but someone dealing with the same moral choices we all face.
Ejiofor's intense performance is well worth an hour and a half of your time.
