Review of Redbelt (2008) by Richard R — 18 Oct 2008
Chiwetel Ejiofor is undoubtably one of the finest actors of his generation. His theatre background makes him a compelling cinematic actor in the same way that the likes of Laurance Olivier and John Gielgud have done previously.
His intensity, humility and personality are used to great effect in this well-marshalled and subtlely affective David Mamet drama. Chiwetel plays a Jiu-jitsu expert who has chosen to shun the lucrative martial arts tournament circuit and is, instead, running a self-defence school in Los Angeles with his Hispanic wife.
His honour, in this modern age, is constantly called into question and an encounter with the troubled Emily Mortimer serves to change his life. Well-acted and well-conceived, Redbelt is about humanity and the fragility of it.
