Review of Redbelt (2008) by Lindsay H — 19 Oct 2008
A disappointing David mamet film to say the least. While it features some of my favorite actors (Ejiofor and Mortimer), it's a slow film with very little going on to keep the viewer interested. Sure the characters are mildly intriguing, but the world they inhabit isn't.
While I like the theme of standing up for your principals while those around you have none, the way it's handled is clumsy and sometimes heavy handed. And there are these double crosses that come out of left field that make no sense and seem to be there because that's the current trend.
It does feature one of my favorite scenes in recent memory... when Ejiofor's character forces Mortimer's to face her fear and she lets loose. Good stuff, surrounded by a lot that's not so good.
