Review of Redbelt (2008) by Ahmed A — 08 Dec 2011
I am an avid David Mamet fan, and have adored his earlier super film-work in The Edge, Glengarry Glen Ross, Hoffa, Wag the Dog, Hannibal, and Heist. He is a true master of the cinema both as a screenwriter and a a director.
Strangely, he misses the mark with Redbelt. The casting is weird, so the actors don't carry their characters convincingly, the drama doesn't always flow upwards; and the story wobbles at times like in the hands of a beginner, not a veteran like Mamet.
The Martial arts stuff is also not well-researched or executed in some scenes. It is disappointing to see a master of this art form deliver such work after so many winners. 3 stars only from me!
