Review of Redacted (2007) by Troy S — 21 Feb 2008
How far does texture go when it comes to accepting certain incidents as "real"? Brian de Palma allegorizes documentary in this fictionalized account of the US soldiers' almost psychopathic brutality in war-torn Mahmoudiya (Irag).
If you are opposed to gruesome, disturbing cinema then you are shirking of the responsibility of being world-aware, of experiencing the bestiality of war, and worst of all - the potential to be human.
De Palma converges docu-like footage with real-time film stock to show us the cinematic truth behind what's really happening in Iraq, inwardly urging us to take a stand. If brutal can be beautiful, then De Palma's Redacted is hereby crowned "Miss Universe".
