Review of Red Tails (2012) by Markka J — 17 Jun 2012
I don't know why the critics were so down on this one. This film started out with a great dogfight sequence and kept building up until the last battle with the film's one real German flying ace.
I'm pretty sure there were many historical errors with the events in the film but I think they really captured the spirit of the Tuskegee Airmen. They were constantly put down by everyone around them but they pulled through because they could rely on men in their own squadron.
It sounds cliche but thankfully the performances by the young actors were believable, especially during the air battles. Howard and Gooding Jr. also put in some solid scenes as the squadron's ranking officers.
I expected the movie to start out with basic training and maybe a montage or two, but there was none of that. It went straight to the dogfights and they became the core of the film which really are filmed well.
I believe this is the best film with Lucas' name attached since the Indiana Jones trilogy.
