Review of Red Tails (2012) by Josh R — 28 Jun 2012
There is some liberty taken with the history (of course), and some of the dialogue spoken by peripheral characters is of the sort I would expect from an 8th Grade aspiring screenwriter, but the film overall presents the challenges and legacy of the Tuskegee pilots fairly and with honor. Specific characters were nicely developed and for the most part the storytellers maintained the integrity of where each character's actions lef them; it's tough to develop everyone in a fighter squadron film. The aerial combat action was superb and the audio track fully immerses the viewer.
I loved how the screenwriters made sure the Tuskegee airmen considered themselves Americans, and were proud to be so despite the prejudice. I loved how the squadron was made to focus on what was truly important in their mission: returning men to their families, NOT racking up personal or squadron kill totals. It's a great message when selflessness is shown as being the far greater reward, and bravo to the production for drawing this out as a key theme!
