Review of Red Tails (2012) by Rainer K — 29 Jun 2012
Although it has been in development limbo for the last 20 years it seems that noone ever considered to provide a decent script for the film.
Maybe, after all, it hasn't been only racial prejudices that prevented the making of the film (although I won't deny that it was part of the problem).
In recent past I've seen only few films with so many terrible one-liners and overly-dramatic speeches - all delivered by some papercut characters we never quite care for.
There's a pretty neat ensemble cast (incl. Cuba Gooding jr. and Terrence Howard amongst others) who has nothing to work with - neither decent lines nor any dramatic conflicts or situation, we, the audience, could care about.
Red Tails lacks the dramatic muscles it should have, considering its back story and instead is nothing more than a dud.
What should have been a powerful and important film is only enjoyable when the aerial fights going on (not without prototypical portrayals of German fighter pilots though). You can see the expertise that brought us TIE-Fighters and X-Wings in the countless dogfights up in planet Earth's sky.
