Review of Red Tails (2012) by Michael D — 01 Jul 2012
The story of the Tuskagee Airmen needed to be told but if you want to learn about it in an informed and entertaining way I suggest you read book about them and not see this bland, blah mish mash of a movie.
The script is really worse than the kind of made for TV gibberish in the early 70s -- just give us a chance and we can win this war for the coach! Cuba Gooding Jr. seems to just show up for his scenes in a bemused way as does Terrance Howard.
Both of these actors are great and have distinctive voices and presences. In all fairness some of the dogfight sequences were great. The way to present this film would have been to focus on ONE of the Tuskagee airmen and then later in the film introduced the ensemble including Howard and Gooding, Jr.
The script needed like one really good re-write by a better writer than whoever wrote this. The one excellent scene in the movie is when one of the characters introduces himself to a beautiful Italian girl and then realizes their first date would be chaperoned by the girl's grandmother.
.. Very charming new world meets old world moment. Unfortunately, this was like the only movie magic moment in the entire film. I really wanted to like this movie more, but couldn't...
