Review of Red Tails (2012) by Jose M — 18 Oct 2012
The movie has top notch special effects, as evidenced by its opening scenes. The planes are almost realistic, and they are also absolutely beautiful, its almost as if the special effects creators took the images off paintings of these World War 2 planes, and bought them to life on screen. Also lots of nice, panoramic view of the countryside.
The action scenes are pretty intense, although they tend to be a far in between. The movie does do a decent job of the struggles of the Negro squadron during WW2 not only against the Germans, but also against racial discrimination within the US Armed Forces itself.
Characterization and dialogue tend to be flat, though. They are mostly predictable and cliched, not much inspiration there. This is typical of George Lucas' films, then tend to be a bit hit and run, and this one is a bit of a run. Pacing is also a bit slow for my taste, I felt tighter editing would've kept the movie to 1 1/2 hours instead of 2, and perhaps sort of enlivened the movie more.
Despite the issues, the movie is good enough to watch. Just too bad, I felt it could've been better. As it is, though, it is not, and you come up with a film that is short of outstanding as it should've been, considering the excellent production values.
