Review of Red State (2011) by Alan L — 04 Mar 2012
Red State had me hooked up until a strange change of pace about half an hour from the end that really does it no favours. I spent some time after the film deciding whether I was a fan of it or not.
It's refreshing to see Kevin Smith enter new territory and he does a good job of handling this horror, even if the white trash cult at the centre of the story are a bit two-dimensional.
Michael Parks is excellent as an out-of-control fundamentalist, while John Goodman is also on top form and there's some nice small roles for Stephen Root and Kevin Pollack.
It's basically all good for the first two thirds and, if Smith had stuck with the same tone until the end credits, it would have likely secured an extra star on its rating.
