Review of Red State (2011) by Jason A — 12 Dec 2011
I dont like Kevin Smith as a director. I'm not sure he was ever cut out for doing the job. Apart from Clerks ( which is still overrated ) he hasn't made a good film in my opinion.
The good news is Red State is massive improvement on recent efforts but it still lacks any proper structure .
This is the story of a town that is famous for having a group of religious nut jobs in its wake and after a these fundamentalists decide that they are to do god's work against the evil that presides in their town but things go very , very wrong.
I really like the first half of this film. In fact I liked it so much I forgot I ws watching a Kevin Smithy film but it was never gonna last.
What starts out as a very clever , dialogue led movie about religious bigotry and teenage exuberance turns into a shooting gun fest and quite frankly a bit of a mess .
I'm hoping Kevin Smith manages to make a whole film that is good and unrushed in the futures because despite the turkeys he has made in the past there is obviously some talent there , albeit hidden.
