Review of Red State (2011) by Tom M — 20 Dec 2011
A compact story and a desperate situation for all characters involved, itâ(TM)s amazing how much director Kevin Smith packs into this short movie with such economy of time. âRed Stateâ? is an engrossing and nasty story involving a clash of two of mankindâ(TM)s most dangerous inventions: religious cults and post 9/11 âPatriot Actâ? government.
Initially not the main character, John Goodman is engrossing and steals the movie, sympathetic in his performance as a federal agent who just throws up his hands and gives the government what it wants against his objections; An armed confrontation with a home-grown cult leader and his church suddenly reclassified as a terrorist cell so that it can be crushed. And deservedly so! No sinners go unpunished in âRed Stateâ?.
