Review of Red State (2011) by Shaun M — 25 Feb 2012
This is a hard film to recommend for several reasons but to those who can stomach anything and want to push yourself during the first half hour, "Red State" is quite disturbing. The film is basically a disturbing suspense/action film from Kevin Smith, however strange that is.
The film itself is more a Horror in the mental state the viewer gets in when he sees the helplessness of the church's first acts. Basically the town is dominated by a fundamentalist preacher named Abin Cooper and his congregation consisting of only blood and marriage related members.
The church not only practices what they preach but they kill "sinners" supposedly in the name of God and twist scripture to their own twisted brand of justice. Did I mention the group has built up a compound complete with it's own arsenal of modified weapons over the years in order to carry out their sick practices.
We are introduced to three boys who are unfortunately lured in by the Cooper family and all hell breaks loose as a deputy is killed and a task force called in to take down the now deemed "Terrorist organization".
The film will leave you feeling strange as many people's actions are highly disturbing and in many cases fatal.
