Review of Red State (2011) by Steve W — 30 Sep 2012
What a disappointing film this ended up being!
Although I do praise Kevin Smith for trying to do a thriller (that's what I thought it was), he really went in different directions in a small amount of time.
Three teenage boys are invited to a woman's trailer (trailer trash, don't you get it lol?) to participate in group sex. However, things don't go as planned. Then, we enter the world of the so-called "religious" people who torture and then kill victims because of per-marital sex or homosexuality. While the three teens are still in, two of the three are suddenly forgotten about after some unsuccessful attempts. Next, it focuses on a shootout between the "people of the church" and the cops (the lead played brilliantly by a much healthier looking John Goodman). Once you know it, we never know what really happened between anyone in the end.
At just 80 minutes and the abruptly dumb ending, Smith had really rushed this film and didn't know exactly what to do here.
