Review of Red State (2011) by Rohit P — 03 Nov 2012
This is an unexpected film from Kevin Smith as the poster states. I was close to turning this off because of what I thought was a cliche beginning with high school students looking for sex. The film suddenly shifts gears and we find ourselves witness to the horrors of a religious cult.
It shifts gears again when John Goodman's character is introduced with the law enforcement angle. It's a tough film to watch because it takes a hard line approach to it's subject matter but it comes together at the end, albeit an anti-climactic end to be sure.
I also feel some of the violence in the film could have been handled better. Make no mistake violence and brainwashing are a major component of this film. Story wise there are few hiccups but it is a film with a message and the message can be heard loud and clear.
