Review of Red State (2011) by Justin H — 31 Mar 2013
While I'm impressed with Kevin Smith's attempt to throw his fans a curveball with "Red State," the film, although well-made, is an empty mess that isn't quite sure what it's trying to be.
This is far from a horror movie, which is what Smith was going for. Despite the horrific nature of the events that transpire, the result is an unsavory mixture of brutal violence of subtle (very subtle) comedy.
Michael Park's performance is one of the few exciting points of a rather disappointing movie (and a VERY disappointing ending), and I wish Kevin Smith had used his undeniable talents to reinvent himself in a different way.
