Review of Red State (2011) by Scot C — 06 Jul 2013
This is a Kevin Smith movie?!? Yes. Yes it is. But, wow, the same guy who made DOGMA made this?!? Yes. Yes he did. This film presents some all-too-realistic insight into some twisted human impulses. The scripture-spouting hate-monger is, unfortunately, an all-to-common archetype of demagoguery in the contemporary world, one found in every faith tradition, foreign or domestic, urging followers to actively hate their neighbors.
To call the film "fairly deadly" is a bit like calling the Grand Canyon "a fairly large hole in the ground." Both John Goodman and Michael Parks are simply brilliant in this film, and they have lots to say.
Screenplay dialogue is, as always, great in a K. Smith film.
