Review of Red State (2011) by Adam E — 01 Aug 2013
Red State is one of the more grim and disturbing horror movies I've seen in a while. It's not perfect. It's too quickly paced. Feels a little rushed in places, as if it could have used an extra twenty minutes just to flesh things out a bit more believably.
Also, not all the dialogue works, some of it feeling too written for the good actors to deliver convincingly. But any flaws aside, Red State will get under your skin. It's villain is truly terrifying, and the actors give solid performances all around.
It's also frequently hilarious. So while not necessarily a masterpiece, Red State earns points because it's a movie designed to get a rise, bad or good, out of everyone who watches it, and it accomplishes exactly that.
Kevin Smith can pat himself on the back for this one.
