Kevin Smith's foray into urban horror is a sometimes uneven but extremely fascinating work. His take on catholic fundamentalism is undeniably powerful, and its ferociously cruel setting could be linked to all sorts of (gun nuts) religious extremism.

It also has the ability not to take itself too seriously, resulting in a tense feature that is also somewhat grotesque. The more grandiose action scenes are sometimes weak, and the shaky camera work somehow an excuse to avoid the use of more complex shooting techniques.

But at the end of the day, Red State still qualifies for a very authentic and powerful piece of independent cinema.
