Review of Red Sparrow (2018) by Jacob M — 04 Mar 2018
A spy thriller that was better than I thought it was going to be, but as my friend said we came into this one with pretty low expectations. We follow ballerina Dominika Egorova (Jennifer Lawrence) who after suffering a tragic accident must find a way to keep her apartment and take care of her sick mother.
In comes her uncle Vanya (Matthias Schoenaerts) a high level official in the government who offers Dominika a chance to assist the government by exposing an enemy of the state. Things go awry which leaves Dominika in a terrible position since no witnesses were suppose to survive.
In comes her uncle again who gives her two choices to either die, or join a program that turns her into a "Sparrow." Sparrow's use their looks and wits to seduce their targets and complete their missions.
Soon enough Dominika realizes that not everything is as it seems especially when sent on her first mission to seduce an undercover US agent named Nate Nash (Joel Edgerton). Dominika becomes torn between duty to her country and also what is actually right.
Overall, like I said not a bad film. Lawrence does quite well in this one and the rest of the cast compliments her well. The movie does start out a bit slow though and overall I didn't always think the plot moved so well especially during the middle parts of the film.
20 minutes left and this film woulda been a lot more solid. The action is brutal here when it does happen which may be just a bit too much for some people, but I thought it added to the film. The movie isn't perfect, but I found enough here that it's worth a look if the trailers interest ya.
