Review of Red Sparrow (2018) by Paul B — 08 Mar 2018
This has been marketed as the Black Widow movie that we haven't yet got and that couldn't be further from the truth. It's basically a spy thriller and It's ok. It's a film that manages to both interesting and uninteresting at the same time. It's pretty clichéd and everyone talks with fake Russian accents which Jennifer Lawrence just about manages to keep hold of and Jeremy Irons just gives up on his. There's quite a bit of sexual violence at the start of the film and is it quite sexist in its portrayal of the female characters in comparison to the males in similar roles. After mother! this is another role in an adult film for Jennifer Lawrence is as captivating as ever unfortunately it does double-down on the languid pace that you expect from movies of this genre and it does get quite repetitive.
For some reason this is also being shown on IMAX, probably to rein in the people thinking they are getting another Atomic Blonde. There is no reason for this film to shown in IMAX so I suggest you save your money if you're considering.
