Review of Red Sparrow (2018) by Robert T — 06 Apr 2018
Well done Russian/US spy movie with a bad guy you love to hate! Just saw this at the cheap seats theater, so obviously it's been out for a while. Never saw it because of the luckwarm reviews, but if are ok with intense presentations of sex and violence, I highly recommend Red Sparrow.
Other reviewers knocked it for a 'convoluted' story, but I think the strong intricate story line is one element that really makes it shine. You wonder how the antipathy between uncle and niece will play out - "You sent me to whore school," she remarks to her uncle who says he wants to 'help' her.
And she definitely evens up the score in an unanticipated twist - but I'm not saying when, but it's sweet revenge and just deserts for this creepy character. And there are other surprises and twists along the way.
Great story! Yes, Jennifer's portrayal of the protagonist is a little different and requires some adjustment from what we are used to; not unlike the unexpected whispery voice the Phantom uses in Phantom of the Opera, but once you realize it is an integral aspect of the character, you get past your limiting expectations and appreciate the character all the more for it.
