Review of Red Sparrow (2018) by Megudyeh — 06 Mar 2018
The best thing in Red Sparrow is Jennifer Lawrence's portrayal of a smart independent woman. Red Sparrow is an interesting mystery-thriller that attempts to be stylish by adding lots of suspense and noir elements but it's dragged down by several things.
Firstly the torture scenes were unnecessarily explicit, much too brutal and blunt for this mystery genre I believe. Secondly for a heavy foreign accent like Russian, English subtitles should've accompanied the film.
Instead half of the dialogue fell on deaf ears which made it very difficult to understand what the hell is going on. Thirdly the whore school sex scenes destroyed any sense of possible intimacy later on.
I would've given it an 8.5 or 9 if those 3 negatives were taken out.
