Review of Red Sparrow (2018) by Jess_Hill — 02 Mar 2018
A gripping and uncomfortable experience, this is a film exploring female power not to take lightly. Lawrence is utterly mesmerising, and the savagery she brings to the brutal action sequences, coupled with the cultivated vulnerability of her appearance is breathtaking.
The pacing is slower than one might expect, though it quickens in the third act, but the true pleasure is to be gained from the twisted plot which truly keeps the audience guessing even in the final moments.
There is a raw edge to this film, which makes the violence more visceral and disturbing than other recent genre pieces, resulting in a film which is more affecting than anticipated. 8.
