Review of Red Sparrow (2018) by Chip A — 27 May 2018
Only in the last 20-30 minutes does the movie reveal how brilliant the hero's truly is. That's the mark of a director who cannot handler complicated stories. Nevertheless the ending reveals how and why the story is worth telling.
Based on the novel by Jason Matthews, himself and experienced CIA operative in Russia, the movie stumbles through grim realities of Putin era Russian politics. The novel, now the first of a trilogy, is a remarkably clever and well researched tale of spycraft and human sacrifices of the spies on both sides.
The bottom line for me is not to pass up this movie. Rather start in the beginning up to the point the hero enters Red Sparrow school. Skip to the last 30 minutes. This will make what remains tolerable.
