Review of Red Sonja (1985) by Siri H — 10 Mar 2009
Arnold Schwarzenegger had a couple of Conan films and The Terminator under his belt by the time he did Red Sonja, so his English has improved significantly, albeit with a strong American accent. That we can forgive. Problem is, everyone else is also speaking English with a prominent American accent, even the ones who are trying to do a British accent. Pretty dire acting, then.
The story itself feels a bit like the cold leftovers from the Sunday dinner that was Conan the Barbarian: It's basically the same, but there's less of it, and it's just not that great any longer. Weaker story, weaker cast (apart from Arnie! Although he doesn't really get to shine in this film) and less spectacular action.
But this film is not completely without merit: You don't have to look very hard to find some references to Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, and for that it gets and extra star.
Apparently there will be a remake of this film in 2010 with Rose McGowan (Pam/ Cherry Darling in Grindhouse) as Red Sonja! Oh joy. Might be worth renting. Might not.
